ABOUT

Black British Golfers (BBG) is built on over 100 years of Black British golf heritage, drawing on a rich but often overlooked presence in the game that dates back to the late 19th century. This heritage underpins our work to transform golf into a sport that is accessible, inclusive, and empowering for underrepresented communities across the UK. Rooted in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (2030), we use golf as a vehicle to promote active participation, education, health, and sustainable economic growth.

We work to highlight the physical, mental, and social benefits of golf within the community, while challenging the barriers that have historically limited access to the game. By bringing together players, families, partners, and community organisations, we turn golf into a platform for visibility, opportunity, and long‑term impact that honours and extends over a century of contribution to the sport.

Our Mission

Our mission is to leverage golf to create positive social outcomes, open up real career pathways, and support small businesses connected to the sport.

Every programme, event, and partnership is designed to make golf a realistic option-on the course and across the wider golf ecosystem.

BBG aims to:

  • Challenge and remove the structural, financial, and cultural barriers that hinder access to golf.

  • Promote and spread the health and wellbeing benefits associated with playing golf.

  • Widen participation through awareness, education, and clear educational and career opportunities in and around golf.

Our Commitment

Health & Well-being

We work to highlight the physical and mental health benefits of golf, promoting the sport to enhance everyday well‑being. Through wellness‑oriented events and community programmes, including initiatives with organisations like LIV Golf and Prostate Cancer UK, BBG showcases golf’s role in supporting active, healthy lifestyles.

We connect movement, nature, community, and purpose, by positioning golf as a tool for improved mental health, confidence, and social connection. These experiences are designed to be welcoming first steps into the game for individuals and families who might never have seen themselves on a golf course, despite generations of Black engagement with the sport.

Education & Opportunity

We focus on providing educational opportunities through mentorship, career pathways, and skill development in golf, particularly for underrepresented communities. Programmes such as the Future Shapers Series and partnerships with community‑based organisations nurture young talent in both academic and sports‑related fields.

This approach connects participants to a wider range of roles in the golf ecosystem-from academic scholarships, coaching and events to media, sustainability, and business. The goal is to ensure that young people can see and access meaningful futures in and around the game, building on a legacy of Black British involvement in golf that spans over a century.

Innovation & Partnerships

We work to ensure gender equality by promoting participation from both male and female athletes in competitions and educational programmes, and by actively recognising female golfers and leaders. Equal opportunities for development are built into events, pathways, and visibility across BBG’s platforms.

We also support small businesses, young people, and emerging creatives, helping brands integrate into golf and fostering economic empowerment within the sport’s ecosystem. By leveraging innovation and collaborating with a wide range of partners, BBG expands access, reduces inequalities, and drives sustainable development through golf-carrying forward over 100 years of Black British golf history into the future.
